Red (2010)

Mary-Louise Parker lives out the adventurous romance novels she has only read when CIA man Bruce Willis drops by for a visit in RED, an action film that does not condescend. The script has some genuine laughs including putting Dame Helen Mirren (in a somewhat obvious performance) behind a gun. It's nice to see actors of a certain age getting into the rough and tumble

The Player (1992)

Only Robert Altman could make The Player, a film that has all the elements needed to market a film successfully (suspense, laughter, violence, hope, heart, nudity, sex, happy ending and no reality) but is quirkily unmarketable because it has none of the elements needed to market a film successfully - except big stars in cameos (Cher, Julia Roberts, Harry Belafonte, Sidney Pollack, Joel Grey, Bruce Willis, Sally Kellerman and Susan Sarandon to name a few). Tim Robbins, Greta Scaachi and Whoopi Goldberg are the real actors that spearhead the plot which contains a mystery (that is solved only if you pay real close attention) within a comedy that is not meant to be laugh out loud funny. Reality is so entwined with fantasy though that you can't help getting caught up in Altman's love affair with Hollywood.

Death Becomes Her (1992)

Sorry Goldie Hawn, Meryl Streep and Bruce Willis but taste trumps talent in Death Becomes Her - bad taste that is. The comedy is SO not funny and the story is SO not, even in its fantastical elements, interesting to watch. The special effects are good and the ladies might have had a fun time making the film because of it but, that alone doesn't mean this one is worth the time it took to finish.

...Perfect Stranger (2007)

Why do studios option mundane scripts and why do actors choose to make them into films? Let's assume Halle Berry and Bruce Willis were paid bucks for Perfect Stranger and let's hope the producers lost money (based on a US theatrical gross of $23 million) because maybe now they'll realize that making a good movie might be a better idea. It's not that it's a horrible film - the story is just not that interesting, and the twist ending is not the right ingredients at the right time; surprisingly though, the very last frame of the film adds a star.
